Behind the Spatter
Speckling looks like the easy part of the job and is in fact the one that takes longest to learn. The glaze has to be the right thickness before the sponge touches it; too thin and the speckles sink in, too thick and they sit on the surface and flake off in the wash.
We spatter in batches of twelve. Each piece gets two passes from a different angle, which is why no two mugs in a set are quite the same. It takes about forty minutes for a full shelf, most of which you spend listening to the radio.
